Our verdict
The M50x is the best-value pair on our list and the easiest recommendation for anyone who works with audio. No ANC, no Bluetooth — just honest sound, superb build and a price that hasn't inflated in ten years.
What we love

- Legendary durability; ours are 4 years old
- Three detachable cables in the box
- Folds flat into a compact travel shape
- $149 — unbeatable price-to-performance
What could be better
- No wireless or ANC — wired only
- Clamp force is firm for big heads
- Cable noise is audible while moving
- Not the last word in neutrality for mixing
Sound quality
Forty-five millimetre drivers give the M50x a famously fun, punchy character: big bass, present mids and crisp highs. It's not perfectly neutral — the low end is flattered — but for tracking, editing and everyday listening it's a joy. Compared to any wireless pair on our list, the wired M50x still resolves more detail, which is why it remains the default in studios.
Wired life & durability
There's no battery to manage and nothing to pair: plug in a 3 m coiled cable for studio use, a 1.2 m straight cable for the road, or the 3 m straight for the desk. The headband, yokes and hinges are built like a tool — Audio-Technica's M50x has a genuine ten-year reputation behind it, and our review unit agrees.
Comfort & build
The ear pads are plush and the swivel design is studio-practical, but the clamp is firm out of the box — bigger heads should budget a breaking-in week. At 285 g it's middleweight, and the fold-flat design makes it the most travel-friendly pair on our list, cables included.

Final take
If you need wireless, look elsewhere. If you want the most sound quality per dollar on this site — and a pair that will still be working when the flagships are retired — buy the M50x and don't overthink it.
