Our verdict
The WH-1000XM5 cancels noise better than almost anything on the market, sounds rich and effortless, and disappears on your head. If you can only buy one pair of premium headphones, this is the one.

Sound quality
Out of the box, the XM5s are tuned warm and forgiving. Bass has weight without bloat, vocals sit forward, and the treble is smooth enough that a harsh mix still sounds musical. On LDAC sources — a high-res Android phone, say — detail retrieval is genuinely impressive for a wireless pair. It's not a neutral studio monitor; it's a "make everything sound good" consumer tuning, and for most people that's exactly the right call.
Noise cancelling & battery
ANC remains the headline. Sony's eight-microphone setup makes a plane cabin sound like a library at 40% volume. Only the Bose QC Ultra matches it, and neither budget pair gets close. Battery life sits at a comfortable 30 hours with ANC on — a full week of commutes — and a 3-minute charge buys another hour of listening.
Comfort & build
At 250 g, the XM5 is one of the lightest flagships, and the redesigned pivoting earcups follow your head shape instead of clamping it. The synthetic leather cushions are plush; some ears run warm after two hours, but we've worn them through eight-hour work days without complaint. Build is good, not exceptional — the plastic frame is confidence-inspiring but lacks the milled-metal heft of an AirPods Max.

Final take
Buy the WH-1000XM5 if you want the best all-round wireless headphones of 2026 and you'd rather not think about it again. It's the safe recommendation that happens to also be the right one.
