Our verdict

The QC Ultra is a specialist in the best way: no headphone on our list removes the world from your ears more completely. It's also wonderfully comfortable. You pay a premium and give up some battery life for that silence — for frequent flyers, it's worth every dollar.

What we love

  • Best noise cancelling we've measured, period
  • Classic Bose comfort — you forget you're wearing them
  • Immersive Audio mode adds believable width
  • Excellent call microphones
  • Simple, reliable controls

What could be better

  • 24-hour battery trails the rivals
  • No LDAC — Android tops out at AAC
  • Case doesn't fold flat
  • Premium price for a niche advantage

Sound quality

Bose has never chased the audiophile crown, and the QC Ultra stays true: the tuning is balanced, easy and forgiving. Bass is present but polite, mids are clean, and the treble avoids harshness. It's the sound you want for podcasts, calls and long listening sessions rather than analytical sessions. Immersive Audio — Bose's spatial mode — genuinely widens the soundstage on music and is the pair's signature trick; we ran it for most of our listening.

Noise cancelling & battery

This is the headline feature. Bose's ANC strips away engine rumble, office chatter and HVAC drone with a decisiveness nothing else matches — including the Sony. The "Aware" transparency mode is natural enough to hold a conversation with the headphones on. The trade-off is battery: 24 hours with ANC on, which is fine for a week of commutes but behind the Sony's 30 and the Sennheiser's 60.

Comfort & build

The QC Ultra inherits the legendary Bose comfort equation: plush synthetic leather, a soft headband and 254 g of clamp-free weight. We wore them for a full flight without the usual "five o'clock ears". Build feels solid if understated — this is a tool, not a jewel, which suits the audience.

Final take

Choose the QC Ultra when silence is the spec you care about most. Everyone else should probably save $30 and take the Sony — but nobody should buy a Bose expecting to hear the world again.
